MBA is one of the most popular post-graduate courses in India and abroad. The full form of MBA is Master of Business Administration. For most managerial-level jobs across domains and sectors, an MBA degree is a necessity which is why, nowadays a large number of BTech, BBA, BCom, BA, BSc, BCA graduates opt for MBA in post graduation. The growing number of businesses has highlighted the importance of this professional course. It teaches the necessary skills required to expand a company or lead a successful business. MBA course also develops leadership skills among the students.
There are 2 types of M.B.A. - General MBA, which is often shorter in duration and Specialized MBA, which may take longer but is more marketable. The program is available in various subjects whose material focuses on commerce, management and economics related subjects. Programs usually include a thesis component, or may even be exclusively research based. The course strengthens the theoretical, analytical and applied knowledge base of Business Administration. The IIM and other autonomous business schools offer a post-graduate diploma in management (PGDM) or Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) which is recognized in India as similar to an MBA degree. Government accreditation bodies such as AICTE established that autonomous business schools can offer only the PGDM or PGPM, whereas a post-graduate degree can be awarded by a university-affiliated colleges, in two-year full-time program. The curriculum of the PGDM or PGPM and MBA degrees are equivalent, though PGDM or PGPM is industry-oriented and mainly focuses on building soft skills. However, a PGDM or PGPM holder cannot pursue Ph.D. since it is not recognized. Non-government accredited Business Schools have mushroomed up owing to the popularity of Business Administration. 1 year fast-track programs have also proliferated in India, especially for candidates with work experience. Such programs are commonly known as Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Business Management.

MBA is a popular course because students from any background - Science, Commerce and Humanities - can pursue it.
A regular MBA is a two-year course divided into four or six semesters. However, there are certain private institutes that offer one-year PGDM programmes as well.
- One can pursue MBA in various modes, such as, Full-Time, Part-Time, Online and Distance-Education. Interested candidates can also find programmes customised based on their professional experience such as Executive MBA
- Many management institutes offer or Post-Graduation Diploma in Management (PGDM), Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) or Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management instead of an MBA degree. There is not much difference between the two, but for the recognition.
- The full-time MBA is the most popular among all the education modes. Full-time MBA includes theory classes, practical projects, student exchange programmes, summer internships and final placements.
- Fresh graduates as well as candidates with a few years of work experience opt for a full-time MBA. Some colleges prefer fresh graduates while some colleges give higher preference to candidates with a few years of work experience.
- On the other hand, the Executive MBA is fit for candidates with 5 plus years work experience as it is designed to enhance their managerial and leadership skills to stay relevant in the job market.
